No, kratom is illegal in Alabama. Mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are Schedule I controlled substances under Alabama Code § 20-2-23, a ban in place since 2016, and the Attorney General stepped up enforcement with a statewide cease-and-desist order on March 25, 2026.

Current Alabama kratom law
Alabama put kratom's alkaloids in Schedule I in 2016, making it one of the first states to ban kratom outright (Restoration Recovery's Alabama summary). That means there's no legal retail market, no age limit and no labeling or testing standard.
Trackers give different possession classifications (one lists a Class C felony, another a Class D felony), and we couldn't confirm the current class from a primary source. Either way, possession is treated as a felony-level drug offense, not a fine.
The March 2026 cease-and-desist order
The newest development is enforcement, not legislation. On March 25, 2026, Attorney General Steve Marshall issued a statewide cease-and-desist order to "businesses currently possessing or selling products containing mitragynine and/or hydroxymitragynine."
What made this case unusual is the products involved. The order named items sold as "Boujee Bliss," "Better Weather" and "Happy Hour." The AG's office said an independent lab found they contained kratom alkaloids, even though they were marketed as natural or holistic products and didn't disclose kratom to buyers.
The takeaway for Alabama residents: a product doesn't have to say "kratom" on the label to fall under the ban. If it contains mitragynine or 7-OH, it's a Schedule I substance in Alabama.
Local rules
There's no local layer to consider. Because kratom is controlled statewide, no Alabama city or county can permit it.
7-OH and synthetic products
7-OH is named in Alabama's Schedule I listing, so concentrated 7-OH tablets, shots and gummies are illegal for the same reason as leaf. Federally, the DEA placed three 7-OH-related compounds in Schedule I on August 26, 2026 (Federal Register), and its proposed 7-OH order was still pending in early September 2026. Buying kratom online if you live in Alabama
All eight vendors we track say they won't ship to Alabama, and six name it explicitly:
- Happy Hippo, Left Coast Kratom, Kats Botanicals, Kraken Kratom, Super Speciosa and Kona Kratom list Alabama as a place they won't ship.
- Golden Monk and MIT45 don't publish a list but say they don't ship anywhere kratom is restricted.
