How we classify each state

Banned means state law or a statewide order makes selling or possessing kratom illegal. Regulated means it's legal under a state kratom law, usually with an age limit and labeling rules. Partly restricted covers states where kratom is legal but restricted in some forms or places. Legal means there's no state kratom law at all.

7-OH is treated differently

Several states now restrict 7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) products even where plain leaf is legal. We never list 7-OH or enhanced products. Read what 7-OH is and why we don't list it.

Which states have banned kratom?

As of September 28, 2026, kratom is banned or illegal to sell in 11 states: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Vermont, Wisconsin. In California the ban comes from the state health department's position rather than a statute. Some cities and counties in other states also ban it.

Is kratom legal federally?

Kratom leaf isn't a federally controlled substance. The FDA hasn't approved it for any use and has warned consumers against it. On August 26, 2026 the DEA temporarily placed three 7-OH-related compounds in Schedule I; its order for 7-OH itself was still pending in early September 2026, and the DEA said it wouldn't cover plain leaf with naturally occurring 7-OH below its threshold.

What is the Kratom Consumer Protection Act?

A model state law backed by the American Kratom Association that allows plain kratom but sets an age limit, labeling and purity rules. Many 'regulated' states in this checker passed a version of it.

Can a vendor ship kratom to a banned state?

Reputable vendors block orders to banned states and cities at checkout. If one doesn't, that's a red flag.
