No, kratom is not legal in Indiana. Indiana lists mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, kratom's two best-known alkaloids, in its statutory definition of a "synthetic drug" (IC 35-31.5-2-321), so selling or possessing kratom is illegal as of September 2026.

Current Indiana kratom law
Indiana doesn't ban kratom by name. It bans it through chemistry. The state's criminal code defines a synthetic drug as a substance containing any of a long list of compounds, "including an analog of the compound," and both mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine appear on that list (Justia, IC 35-31.5-2-321). Because natural kratom leaf contains mitragynine, leaf powder, capsules and extracts are all covered.
That setup has three practical consequences:
- There's no age limit, labeling rule or testing standard, because there's no legal market to regulate.
- "Natural" or "plain leaf" labels don't create an exception. The statute targets the compounds, not how they were made.
- Indiana has been on every major ban list for years. Legal trackers list Indiana alongside Alabama, Arkansas, Vermont and Wisconsin as long-standing ban states (Restoration Recovery tracker).
Penalties depend on the charge and quantity. We didn't find a primary source setting out current synthetic-drug penalties for kratom specifically, so we don't quote figures here.
City and county rules
Local rules don't matter much in Indiana because the ban is statewide. No city or county can allow what state law prohibits.
7-OH and synthetic kratom in Indiana
7-OH products, the concentrated or semi-synthetic items sold in some smoke shops as tablets, shots and gummies, are illegal in Indiana for the same reason as leaf: 7-hydroxymitragynine is on the synthetic drug list.
At the federal level, the DEA placed three 7-OH-related compounds (mitragynine pseudoindoxyl, MGM-15 and MGM-16) in Schedule I on August 26, 2026 (Federal Register). Its proposed order on 7-OH itself was still pending in early September 2026. None of that changes Indiana's ban. More background in what is 7-OH and why we don't list it.
Buying kratom online if you live in Indiana
Online vendors block Indiana addresses. Of the eight vendors KratomRated tracks, six name Indiana on their shipping-restriction pages:

Recent changes and pending bills
Indiana's status hasn't changed in 2025 or 2026. Advocates have pushed bills in past sessions to take kratom off the synthetic drug list and regulate it instead, including a 2025 House bill on "sale of kratom consumable products" (HB 1542). None has passed. A legislation tracker updated September 27, 2026 showed no active Indiana kratom bill.
The broader trend is running the other way. Tennessee, Kansas and Connecticut all added bans in 2026, so a change to Indiana's ban in the near term looks unlikely based on regional activity.
