Kratom capsules and powder contain the same kind of product, ground kratom leaf, but capsules cost more per gram at every vendor we could price, most often about twice as much (range roughly 1.3x to 5x, checked September 28, 2026). You pay the premium for pre-filled convenience; powder wins on price, especially in bulk.

Price per gram: capsules vs powder
To compare fairly, we converted each option to price per gram: capsule count × stated fill weight = grams. Where a vendor sells capsules by weight (Kraken) we used the weight directly.

One oddity: Golden Monk's 1,000-count capsules ($71.99) cost only $11 more than its 250-count ($60.99), which brings the big bag to about 14 cents per gram, the lowest capsule price per gram in this table. That's how the listings read when we checked; confirm at checkout.
Label clarity: can you tell how much is in a capsule?
Price per gram only works if the vendor states the fill weight. Here's what we found:

If a vendor doesn't state fill weight, you can't compare its capsules to anyone else's, or to its own powder. See also best kratom capsules for price per capsule.
Convenience vs cost
Capsules
- Pre-filled and portable; no measuring or taste to deal with.
- Cost more per gram at every vendor we could calculate.
- Fewer strains: most vendors offer far more powders than capsules (Left Coast, for instance, listed 5 plain-leaf capsule products).
- Harder to return once opened at vendors that refund only unopened products (Kraken, Left Coast).
Powder
- Cheapest per gram, and the gap widens in bulk (Golden Monk kilos from about 4 cents per gram).
- Widest strain choice and smallest trial bags (28-35g at Kraken, Left Coast and Kats; 1 oz at Happy Hippo).
- Requires measuring and storage.
Lab testing: capsules vs powder
A capsule is only as good as the powder inside it, but the COA should match the capsule lot, not just the strain:
- Golden Monk posts separate COAs per capsule line and count (e.g., "White Capsules 1000CT") on its COA page.
- Super Speciosa's batch lookup covers capsules and names its ISO 17025 labs.
- Kats Botanicals bottles carry a QR code to the lot's results on its COA page; labs aren't named.
- Kraken offers COAs on request; Kona and Left Coast had no public COAs we could find.

Plain-leaf capsules vs extract capsules
Leaf capsules contain ground leaf. Extract capsules and softgels (sold by Kats, Left Coast, Super Speciosa and MIT45, among others) contain concentrated extract and aren't comparable per gram. Anything marketed with 7-OH is a different category again; we don't list it (why).
Which to choose
- Lowest cost: powder, in the biggest bag you'll realistically use. Compare in best kratom powder.
- Convenience: capsules from a vendor that states fill weight and publishes batch COAs. Compare in best kratom capsules.
- Trying a strain: small powder bags cost less than the smallest capsule bottles at most vendors. Strain guides: Maeng Da, Bali, red Borneo, Thai.
Risk note
The FDA has not approved kratom in any form for medical use and warns consumers not to use it. Kratom is banned in several states and some cities (state guide).
